CNC SWISS MACHINING AND TURNING
CNC Swiss-Type Precision Components
Swiss–style CNC machines operate in much the same way as other CNC lathes, but their specialized design allows them to produce components quicker and with much tighter tolerances. The Swiss-style’s main design features, including a sliding headstock and increased spindle RPM, allow Swiss machines to produce components of the same or greater precision in half the time a normal CNC lathe would take.
WHAT IS CNC TURNING?
Turning is a common manufacturing process in which machine shops use high-speed lathes equipped with a cutting tool to shape raw materials into precision components. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) turning is a sub-type of the process that uses a computer interface to automate the cutting process, reducing the risk of human error and ensuring components meet rigorous quality standards and tolerance constraints.
Unmatched Versatility
Swiss CNC lathes can produce a large range of custom components that may require tight tolerances or dealing with challenging materials. A specific skillset is required to set up and program a Swiss lathe but once mastered – the result is one of the most efficient machine tools in the industry.
A History of Precision Swiss Machining
Swiss-type CNC machines were first designed in Switzerland in the 1870s to produce collets for watch balance springs. The adaptability, speed, and precision of these new machines allowed Swiss watchmakers to compete with American watchmakers by allowing Swiss machine shops to produce high volumes of extremely precise components. By the 1960s, the Swiss CNC Machine had gained worldwide popularity in a variety of industries and established a reputation for quality and reliability. Today, most CNC Swiss machines are produced in Japan by Star, Citizen, and Tsugami.
